A solver computes strategies that cannot be exploited in a given spot. Studying its output has become standard preparation at almost every serious level of the game, and the strategic baseline has risen sharply as a result.
The objection is not that solvers are wrong. It is that widespread solver study converges players on the same answers. Where previous generations developed distinctive, sometimes idiosyncratic styles, a field of well-studied players increasingly plays similarly because they have all read the same solution.
There is a second objection about access. Solver work requires software, computing time and the ability to interpret output. That is a resource gap, and it maps onto who can afford to study rather than who has the most aptitude for the game.

Solvers replaced folklore with analysis, and understanding a game more deeply is not a loss.
- Strategy is now grounded in something testable rather than in received wisdom repeated at the table.
- The tools are widely available and comparatively cheap against historical coaching costs, which broadened access to good information.
- Every mature competitive discipline eventually formalised its theory, and none of them became less interesting for it.
- Real skill difference persists in execution, adaptation and reading opponents who deviate from the solution.
- Solver work is study, not assistance — the player is still alone at the table making the decision.
The case that solvers harmed poker
Convergence on one correct answer removes the variety that made individual players worth watching.
- A field that has all studied the same output plays more alike, and homogeneous play is duller to watch and to face.
- Emphasis shifts from table intuition toward memorising and recalling precomputed strategy.
- The resource gap is real: hardware, subscriptions and study time are not evenly distributed.
- Recreational players face opponents with a preparation advantage they cannot perceive, let alone match.
- The pursuit of unexploitable play discourages the creative, exploitative lines that produced poker’s memorable moments.
